The Truth About Rust-Oleum Flooring

Rust-Oleum has quickly become one of the most popular DIY products for flooring among homeowners. After all, it’s quite simple to use. However, is it really the best flooring solution?

This article will discuss everything you need to know about Rust-Oleum so you can make the best decision for your next flooring project.

What is Rust-Oleum?

Rust-Oleum home floor coating is a two-part water-based epoxy coating system that provides a durable and beautiful finish to your floor. Rust-Oleum home floor coating is ideal for surfaces such as ceramic, concrete, hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and more.

The Benefits

Rust-Oleum epoxy is a low odor, environmentally friendly, and low maintenance floor covering. It protects your floor from spills and can support heavy traffic for long periods. Additionally, it protects against:

  • Gasoline
  • Antifreeze
  • Motor oil
  • Salt
  • Hot tire pickup

How it Works

To guarantee a lasting finish, all preparation and application instructions should be followed carefully.

Check Your Floor

One of Rust-Oleum applications’ most important instructions is to check your floor first to see if it’s suitable for painting. Rust-Oleum should not be applied if any of the following conditions exist as it can prevent it from adhering correctly:

  • Concrete Sealant
  • Poorly-bonded previous paint
  • Moisture in the concrete
  • Concrete dust
  • Loose or poorly cured concrete

Clean Your Area

Once you’ve confirmed that your floor can be treated with Rust-Oleum, remove all furniture, tools, vehicles, and items. Then, check your floor for any oil or grease spots. If so, clean with the heavy-duty degreaser that comes with the Rust-Oleum kit. Thoroughly clean with a scrub brush and absorb all excess degreaser with paper towels. Make sure to rinse the entire floor twice to remove all degreaser and contaminants.

Prepare Your Surface

To prepare your surface, mix the concrete etch with water until dissolved. Prewet the whole floor with a hose, and then use a plastic watering to distribute the concrete etch on the entire surface. Work the solution into your floor using a bristle brush and leave it to sit for 2-3 minutes. Once set, rinse each section thoroughly with water and scrub once again to remove all contaminants. The last step is to allow the surface to dry entirely overnight.

Verify the Temperature

Rust-Oleum should only be applied when the air temperature is between 60-85°F and when the floor temperature is at a minimum of 55°F. Failing to follow these instructions could result in your floor coating not getting installed correctly.

Apply the Rust-Oleum

If the temperature is ideal, proceed to combine part A (the activator) into part B (the base) to make the Rust-Oleum mix. Stir thoroughly for three minutes and use within the time indicated in the instructions. Use a roller to apply the pain in 4’x4’ sections and add the chips on the wet areas until completed.

Drying Times

Your surface should be ready for lightfoot traffic in 12-16 hours, for heavy items in 24-48 hours, and in 3 days for regular vehicular traffic (if used in a garage).
